The questions were written by the Prezi Prep team to the year 4 syllabus and the exam format; they are not official exam questions. Solve first, then open the answer.
Numbers and operations
Find the difference between the largest and the smallest four-digit numbers made from the digits 3, 7, 0 and 5 (each digit used once).
- A4,473
- B4,437
- C4,374
- D4,743
Show the answer
Correct answer: A — 4,473
The largest number has the digits in descending order: 7530. The smallest has them ascending, but a number cannot start with 0: 3057. The difference is 7530 − 3057 = 4,473.
Divide 48 by 6, multiply the result by 9, then subtract that number from 100. What do you get?
- A28
- B38
- C18
- D72
Show the answer
Correct answer: A — 28
48 ÷ 6 = 8; 8 × 9 = 72; 100 − 72 = 28. The option 72 is the answer with the last step left out.
Fractions
A class has 32 pupils, and 3/8 of them are girls. How many boys are in the class?
- A12
- B20
- C24
- D8
Show the answer
Correct answer: B — 20
Girls: 32 ÷ 8 × 3 = 12. Boys: 32 − 12 = 20. The question asked for boys, not girls; 12 is the trap.
Equation
Find x in the equation x × 4 − 18 = 30.
- A3
- B12
- C48
- D6
Show the answer
Correct answer: B — 12
First undo the subtraction: x × 4 = 30 + 18 = 48. Then x = 48 ÷ 4 = 12. Check: 12 × 4 − 18 = 48 − 18 = 30.
Geometry
A rectangle has a perimeter of 36 cm and its length is twice its width. Find its area.
- A72 cm²
- B36 cm²
- C108 cm²
- D54 cm²
Show the answer
Correct answer: A — 72 cm²
If the width is a, the length is 2a; the perimeter 2 × (a + 2a) = 6a = 36, so a = 6 cm and the length is 12 cm. The area is 6 × 12 = 72 cm².
What is the total length of all the edges of a cube with edge 3 cm?
- A27 cm
- B36 cm
- C54 cm
- D12 cm
Show the answer
Correct answer: B — 36 cm
A cube has 12 equal edges: 12 × 3 = 36 cm. 27 is the volume (cm³) and 54 the surface area (cm²): neither answers this question.
Word problem
A train travelled 180 km in 3 hours. How far will it travel in 5 hours at the same speed?
- A300 km
- B240 km
- C360 km
- D270 km
Show the answer
Correct answer: A — 300 km
The speed is 180 ÷ 3 = 60 km/h. In 5 hours: 60 × 5 = 300 km. 240 is for 4 hours, 360 for 6.
Logic
Five children stand in a row. Ali is first and Vali is last. Said stands next to Ali and Lola next to Vali. In which position is the fifth child, Karim?
- A2nd
- B3rd
- C4th
- DCannot be determined
Show the answer
Correct answer: B — 3rd
1 is Ali, 5 is Vali. Said next to Ali is 2nd; Lola next to Vali is 4th. The only free place is 3rd, and that is Karim.
