Stage 2 English: grammar, reading and vocabulary
Updated: 7 October 2026
English is at stage 2, for the 480 candidates who pass stage 1. The questions use simple English but demand speed: 40 questions in 40 minutes.
What is the test like?
- 40 questions; the 2025 announcements gave 40 minutes.
- Two parts: grammar and vocabulary (fill the gap, pick the right form) and reading (a short text with questions).
- All multiple choice, nothing written.
- Beginner level: around A1–A2 on the international scale, a little above the year 4 syllabus.
Grammar: what to know
- to be and have got: am / is / are, has / have.
- Present Simple and Present Continuous: *she goes* / *she is going*, the third-person ending.
- Past Simple: regular and irregular verbs (*went, saw, had*).
- there is / there are, a / an / the.
- Plurals: *books*, *children*, *feet*.
- Prepositions: in, on, at, under, next to, between.
- Question words: what, where, when, who, how many.
- can / must / should, this / that / these / those.
- Comparatives and superlatives: bigger, the biggest, more interesting.
- Cardinal and ordinal numbers, telling the time and the date.
Reading
A short text (50–120 words: a school day, a family, an animal) and 5–8 questions: who, what, when, where; true or false; fill a gap with a word from the text.
- Read the questions first, then the text: you know what you are looking for.
- Find the question's key word in the text; the answer sits next to that sentence.
- Do not stop at an unknown word: if the question does not need it, move on.
Vocabulary: how many words?
For year 4, the 800–1,000 most frequent words are enough. Topics: family and friends, school, home and rooms, food, animals, weather and seasons, time, sport and free time, jobs, colours and numbers, and verbs such as go, make, take, like.
Prezi Prep has over 820 words in 41 levels, served with spaced repetition: a word comes back just before it would be forgotten. The free plan gives 10 new words a day, over 1,000 in a school year.
A daily plan
- 10 new words and yesterday's review, 5 minutes.
- One grammar exercise, one topic from the list above, 5 minutes.
- A short text with questions twice a week, 5 minutes.
- Read aloud: a word sticks through the eyes and the ears.
